Malefactor’s lineage traces back to seminal greats like Slayer, Sepultura, and the like. What separates Malefactor from those two bands, however, is a much more natural sound to A Collection of Broken Dreams from the Common Man. While nobody’s going to mistake Malefactor’s latest with something recorded decades ago, it doesn’t sound like it was recorded straight through a computer and electronically cleaned. The production, courtesy of Matt Washburn, gives the band a full, warm sound, something lacking in what I consider Malefactor’s contemporaries. As for the songs themselves, A Collection of Broken Dreams' thirteen songs jump out and reach for the throat. One of the better tracks is “Bloodsoaked Cage,” and it’s a good example of why you should check out Malefactor. While the tempo is as-fast-as-can-be, the main riff is actually grooving. If you’ve worn out your thrash records from days of old and are hungry for something new, check out Malefactor.
